The WWE hosts it’s first chronological Pay-Per-View under the name ‘Great Balls of Fire’. The name is embarrassing, the logo is just as bad but the event has potential. Eight matches have been scheduled for the PPV. The main event features Brock Lesnar vs Samoa Joe, which has the potential to be one of the matches of the year so far.
Neville vs Akira Tozawa
Neville is having the best run of his career right now, now his feud with Aries has ended indefinitely (as Aries has been granted his release), he is now solely the main man in the Cruiserweight division. Tozawa in recent weeks has benefitted from being part of Titus Worldwide, it’s not quite like being a Paul Heyman guy, but Titus’ great work with Tozawa has given him a certain level of exposure he didn’t have before. But even so I expect Neville’s good run to continue, I see him holding the belt for a long time or until at least a bigger stage like SummerSlam.
Official Prediction: Neville wins.
Enzo Amore vs Big Cass
The only way Enzo could win this match, is due to a roll up pin, with Big Cass beating the living hell out of him afterwards, so he still has momentum. But even then I’m still expecting Big Cass to dominate this one. I don’t think the WWE would have any plans to let him lose as they plan to project him to a main event star. And I don’t think it would be believable to have Enzo win this one anyway, due to the sheer size difference between the two former buddies. A loss to Big Cass would evaporate his push on his way to a big match at SummerSlam with the Big Show. Hopefully the match here does the storyline some justice.
Official Prediction: Big Cass wins with ease.
Sheamus and Cesaro vs The Hardy Boyz
(Tag Team Championships)
In an ideal scenario this match would be the one to turn the Hardy’s broken, but I’m still not sure how close or far we are from that. This is a tricky one to call as Sheamus and Cesaro have just turned heel and losing the belts so soon would damage their momentum. On the flip side of that, the Hardy Boyz are also losing their momentum from WrestleMania and a Hardy Boyz vs The Revival feud would be exceptional. But Sheamus and Cesaro would suffer more from a defeat here and with tag teams breaking up left and right, it’s important to keep a good team together here.
Official Prediction: Sheamus and Cesaro win in what is hopefully the end to this feud.
Alexa Bliss vs Sasha Banks
This seems like a filler fight to me with the lack of storylines surrounding the women’s division. It will be a one and done where Bliss gets the nod and sets up a big SummerSlam clash with Nia Jax.
Official prediction: Bliss wins.
Seth Rollins vs Bray Wyatt
For me there’s two thoughts going through the heads of the WWE creative team. Do we make Seth win for a big push before the release of 2K18 as he is the cover star? Or do we let Wyatt win before he becomes a mid carder and even more irrelevant to the point of no return? The fact is there is no need for this feud which came from nothing and feels just as pointless. But a win here for Rollins does very little, whereas a loss for Wyatt could be damaging. Expect a Wyatt win on that basis.
Official Prediction: Bray Wyatt wins and we can finally see an end to this shambles.
The Miz vs Dean Ambrose
The fact that this feud is continuing whilst Balor is in limbo and may not even be on this card astonishes me. The Miz vs Dean Ambrose has been good but it is growing stale now, even if they are continuing to put on some good matches here and there. With the Universal title picture looking like it’s going to be Brock, Strowman and Reigns, why not let Balor have a run at the Intercontinental Championship. Balor is not so great on the mic but in a feud with the best talker on RAW he could be carried during promos. Hopefully The Miz wins this and finally ends the feud to set up a SummerSlam match with Balor.
Official Prediction: The Miz retains, possibly with interference from his Miztourage.
Roman Reigns vs Braun Strowman
“Insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” – Albert Einstein. This seems to apply to the WWE creative team who keep trying to push Roman to the top as a face. And by the crowd’s reactions it simply won’t work. Strowman is the man getting the cheers not Roman, and that says a lot. This feud has been the best thing on RAW right now, whilst other feuds haven’t felt authentic and have been sluggish this feud has been brilliant. This match has been designed for Reigns to win, to upset the odds and put the monster that is Braun Strowman in an ambulance and win, setting up a SummerSlam match with Lesnar. Or Strowman could dominate Reigns like he did a few months ago and set up the Lesnar vs Strowman feud we expected a few months back. One things for sure the winner will go on to face Lesnar for the title.
Official Prediction: Strowman wins.
Brock Lesnar vs Samoa Joe
It’s been good to have Brock back on TV, but during the build up Samoa Joe has been the star and showed why he deserved to be the victor of the Fatal 5-Way. This match has the potential to be a dream match. It’s clear that it will be a one off as Lesnar won’t drop the title in his first defence. Hopefully we see Lesnar win the match but Joe win the spectacle and come off strong in an epic match.
Official Prediction: Brock Lesnar wins, but doesn’t dominate.
