Conor McGregor is the biggest name in combat sports. Like the man he intends to face he is a polarising figure, you either love him or you hate him. I for one absolutely love the man and believe he is the most entertaining man on the planet. McGregor’s girlfriend has recently given birth to their baby boy which paves the way for the ultimate MMA vs Boxing match up. Many people have looked at this epic match up and have ruled out Conor’s chances, but having followed his career closely I can no longer never rule him out. Heres five reasons why McGregor can beat Mayweather Jr if they ever come face to face in the ring.
.YOUTH – McGregor is entering the peak of his career and is currently 28 years old, whereas Mayweather is ‘retired’ and aged 40, a 12 year gap between the fighters. Floyd hasn’t fought since September 2015, and has aged two years since that bout, we are yet to see how an older Mayweather will cope in the ring. We recently saw Wladimir Klitschko go toe to toe with Anthony Joshua, the 41 year old was showing his class until his age caught up with him and he started to run out of gas allowing Joshua to knock him out. We could well see a similar situation in this bout, however there has to be question marks on how Conor himself will fare doing his first professional 12 x 3 minute rounds if it goes that far.
.POWER – Conor McGregor could knock out anyone with his left hand, he possesses accuracy and power like I’ve never seen before. It took him one punch to knock out Jose Aldo someone who had never previously been knocked out before. Nate Diaz, McGregor’s biggest rival wouldn’t even rule out the chances of him being able to knock out Mayweather in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani. Even with the bigger 12 oz gloves McGregor has the power to trouble Mayweather.
.STYLE – Conor is a southpaw which is a style Mayweather has previously struggled with. His ability to shoulder roll against an orthodox fighter is flawless but has to be questioned when facing a southpaw. Here’s what De La Hoya said before Mayweather’s bout with Pacquiao “I’ve preached this all along. The left hand is the Kryptonite for Mayweather. He just does not know how to block a jab. It’s just not part of his arsenal. It’s not a part of his defense, blocking that jab. What’s going to be interesting is that Pacquiao has a lot of leg movement. So if he can keep firing that left hand, doubling it up and moving inside, moving outside he can give Floyd some trouble and make him think up there. Because you have to make Mayweather think. You have to take him out of his comfort zone. If Mayweather gets comfortable, he can cruise and win a relatively easy fight for 12 rounds.” Although Pacquaio was unable to cause Mayweather problems, McGregor could be the guy to do this as his movement is incredible as he steps in and out of the pocket effortlessly and if he gets it right it he could put Mayweather in all sorts of trouble. The MMA style of McGregor is also an unknown entity to Money Mayweather and there has to be questioned marks over how he will cope as McGregor will differ to all of his previous 49 competitors.
.MENTAL WARFARE – Both fighters are experts at trash talking, which would make the build up to the fight even more entertaining than a battle scene in Game Of Thrones and that’s really f**king entertaining. However, I feel as though McGregor has a slight edge on this one, after all it was Mayweather that called him out and he seemed bothered by McGregor’s popularity calling it “racism” that he isn’t as popular when they’re so similar. McGregor can rattle Mayweather and get him emotionally invested so that he makes mistakes, look at UFC 194 for example, he’s pretty good at it.
.SIZE – McGregor is the much bigger competitor here. Every inch counts in combat sports and McGregor is bigger by just one and has just the two inch reach advantage. But when these two finally come face to face at a press conference or elsewhere you will see the sheer size difference between the two men.
